Federation of Community Forestry Users Nepal (FECOFUN)
Federation of Community Forestry Users Nepal is an umbrella organization of community based forest users group throughout Nepal. It is an autonomous, non-partisan, membership-based organization, with about 9 million members. FECOFUN is innovative in that it was the first national federation established by and for community forest users in Nepal. Established in 1995, FECOFUN emerged out of the idea that forest users from all parts of the country should be linked in order to strengthen their role and voice in the policy making process. FECOFUN’s organizational structure has become a role model for other federations, nationally and internationally. It has become a representative, inclusive, democratic, people’s organization with gender balance. Since its inception, the principal policy of FECOFUN focused on good governance that includes; decentralization, inclusiveness, participatory approach in decision making and sharing of benefit as well as gender balance in leadership positions. It is extended over entire country covering 75 districts with 1100 local FECOFUN and enrolling 14364 Community Forestry of total 18133 community forestry of Nepal. All district chapters are independent and run autonomously by their own steering committee member.
