Kaji Man Limbu, Farmer of Shantinagar, Jhapa District Published date: 19 June, 2014
We were poor and ignorant, we were deceived by fate and people, and we were not given ownership papers for land we had been farming for decades. When we protested that we should be provided with the land ownership paper, they sent bullies against us who beat us with sticks; I have personally endured 3 days’ of torture from their hands. They have made us cry for years and now you people from NRCTC-N have come here to wipe our tears, we are very thankful for it. We hope that you take our tear-filled story to the Council of Ministers; we heartily request party representatives to approve the agreement done at local level from the Council of Ministers and provide us with our land ownership papers. In the past, the School committee used to badger us to pay lease amount, when we said we don’t have money, they said you have to pay it anyhow, sell anything of any worth. So were the times, when they made us cry our eyes out for the land we have watered with our sweat and blood, and here we are now, God has listened to our prayers by sending facilitators from NRCTC-N to our doorsteps. At first I didn’t believe the facilitators, and did not attend the meetings fearing that I will be tortured again, but they convinced me that they are not here to torture anybody, they are here to talk and transform the conflict for the benefit of all. Then I supported them with all my hearts, they knocked on each doorstep, listened to everyone’s story and they have led us to the point of agreement.
